Georgia Power broke ground on a $75 million, 30-MW solar power project on a Department of the Navy military base in Georgia.

The Southern Co. (NYSE: SO) unit started construction on the Naval Submarine Base (SUBASE) Kings Bay solar power plant, which joined three other 30-MW facilities under construction at U.S. Army bases Fort Gordon, Fort Stewart and Fort Benning.

The SUBASE Kings Bay project will use 136,000 solar panels sited on 258 acres on base. The plant is expected to come online by the end of 2016.

Georgia Power and the Navy Department are also working on details for a potential fifth solar project at the Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany.
